Can clergy write off the same expenses for a housing allowance and a separate home based business?

Monday, May 4th, 2009

My husband is a minister and receives a housing allowance. He does all of his clergy business activities from his home office. But he also has a different home-based business where he conducts the business from the same home office. Can he deduct the expenses such as mortgage interest, utilities, etc. from the housing allowance and also deduct those same expenses for his home based business?

Short version: You can't double dip. What gets written off as a parsonage allowance can't be written off again elsewhere.

How do I go about starting a home based business? What are some grants that I can apply for to help me?

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

I am interested in starting a home based business, at least home based for now. I want to design and sell plus sized clothing. Do I need a business license? What about financial assistance? Also if its needed it will be located in middle TN.

You will need a state tax ID number for sales tax purposes. If you need a city license you need to check with the local city clerk. Also make sure you can operate a home-based business in that area by contacting the zoning department. You probably won' get a SBA grant to start that particular business but I'm sure if you asked around you could get a low-interest loan. Good luck.

How can I start a home based business in cake decorating.?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I AM WANTING TO START A HOME BASED BUSINESS IN CAKE DECORATING. I AM A STAY AT HOME MOM WITH 3 KIDS AND LOVE BAKING CAKES,PIES AND PASTERY AND REALLY LOVE TO DECORATE THEM. I' VE TOOK CLASSES AS WELL ON CAKE DECORATING AND NOW WANT TO GET MORE INTO IT A LOT MORE. I'VE BEEN DOING CAKES FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS OR SO. ALSO WHERE AND WHAT OTHER CLASSES CAN I TAKE TO HELP OUT AS WELL. ANY SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

The easiest way is word of mouth advertising, cause it's free. Tell everyone you know to spread the word. Tell your childrens friends parents so they can call on you when their kids have birthdays.

A cheap way to get started is actually right here with Yahoo. They can start you a website for under 10 bucks a month, they do all the hosting and the website creator program they have for you is very easy to use, it does not require any experiance in website building to use. Then use a free program to submit your website to search engines.

Go to Kinkos or somewhere and make some cards. They can start you out with 500 or so, then drop them off everwhere you can. Also have them make you a magnetic sign (usually a page size graphic advertizement with just your name and business name on it with a big phone #) and stick this on your car.

As far as the legality goes, your just one person so you won't need to worry about all the pesky tax and labor issues for yourself, but go to IRS.gov and get a TIN # they are free, and will help you later come next year tax time. I'd consult an accountant once you start making some money from this, to help keep you tax-complient, but don't worry about that right away.

The key is to get new business, (people you have not helped with cake before) then ask them what they think about your finished product, if they are complementing you slide them a couple of business cards and tell them to pass them out if they know anyone with a wedding coming up or something.

Starting in March, you may want to buy advertising either online or somewhere, getting the word out that you make wedding cakes. Make sure to start early. Another good way is to create refrigarator magnets (although not really as cheap a business cards, they do work well) either with a home printer and magnet printer paper, or again at your neiborhood printers. Normally runs about 25-50 cents per magnet. Pass them out in March, so when those looking for cake decorators see them at a friends house or as that person if they know anyone, they will remember the magnet they have been staring at for a while on the frig.

Hope that helps

How to start a home based business?

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I want to start a home based business, but I'm not sure where to start. I have some money saved up to invest but not a lot.

There's two ways you can go about having a home based business.

You can invest in one of many home biz opportunities available. You basically subscribe as a member (usually by purchasing one or more of the company's products), and then you gain the rights to sell their products. You also recruit other distributors that work beneath you, and earn you a commission each time they make a sale as well. These are network marketing, MLM, and direct sales companies.

However, there are several drawbacks to these types of businesses. One is that you don't have any ownership. The products don't belong to you, the company isn't owned by you, and your downline members may or may not remain loyal to you. If the company shuts it's doors, changes it's prices or products, or simply kicks you out, you're dead in the water.

In essence, all you are is a high commissioned sales person. It works, but it has it's dangers.

A much better solution is to sell information products. The online information marketing industry offers the same exact benefits as a network marketing or MLM company (passive, residual income), and same potentially wealthy lifestyle. The advantage is that you don't have any of the drawbacks mentioned above.

You create and own the information product, the company is yours, the websites are yours, and all the profits are yours. You don't have to bother with recruiting sales people that may leave you or do nothing, and you don't have to worry about training them and putting up with their complaints and frustrations.

In other words, you will have a REAL business that can be extremely lucrative for you quickly.

Most people simply don't know how to get into the information marketing business, or are too intimidated by it because they perceive it to be difficult. However, it's really not, and there are tools for you to learn how to build an online information business to a full-time income within months, even if you're starting from absolute scratch.

Shiraz Khan and Nitro Marketing have built a strong reputation for teaching people how to build an internet business from scratch using a powerful 10-step process.

Has anyone tried a home based business that is actually legitimate?

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Is there such thing as a home based business that actually makes you money without a huge investment?

There are actually quite a few home based businesses that are legitimate. Here is a few key factors when looking through different home based business's to make sure they are real companies that your getting involved in. Not one that is just going to take your money.
1. Are they registered with the BBB?
2. How long have they been in business for?
3. What did Inc 500 rate them?
4. Have they been feature in magazine's?
5. Do they have a real product and or service? Not just some lame service that they proclaim to sale like Ivy leaves or something like that. (did that when I was 5, didn't work out very well. LOL)
So many different things to look into. But these are the important ones.
Most home based business cost under $500. Some cost more depending on what it is you want to do. I don't know what you like to do, what experience you have or anything like that. If you want to get involved with a business that will train you as you earn sort of thing, or just dive into something on your own. So I can only tell you what my husband and I started over six years ago. It well supports our family as well as a major funding source for our non-profit organization that we started up a while back with part of the income we earned. As well as it's a funding source for other non-profit organizations.
Anyhow, we got involved in the telecommunications industry.
With a world wide company that's over 15 years old. We've been featured in several magazines like USA Today, Success, Fortune etc. Inc 500 rated us the 22nd fastest growing company. They offer services that people use every day and pay for anyway, but now they can have a lower cost. Services such as local and long distance phones, Internet, digital phones, video phones (you can see the person your taking to live)VOIP, Satallite tv, and all the major cellular phone companies like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltell, Nextell etc. have partnered up with them too.
How many people do you know, or know of, that uses or has one or more of these services? How would you feel if you could save people money on services that they're most likely already using, if not you can offer them the service, and everytime they pay their bills each month, you make a percentage off these bills every single month. Huge income opportunity. It's incredible how much money is involved in this industry.
If you'd like more information feel free to email me and I'll be happy to pass it along to you.

I also created a blog on my 360 page on home based business's. There's over half a dozen different ones to take a look at. Your more then welcome to browse through them. If you find one that's interesting, contact the person who wrote it and they can point you out in the right direction.

What does you think about a home based business?

Friday, March 27th, 2009

What do you think about a home based business do you think it's worth it calling people or trying to sell a product?

The answer depends.
Home based business has its value. It is one kind of the business models. Passed records proved that it is a useful model. Some people in this field got large achievement with the fact that some of them lose their time and monetery capital in this field.
There are two kinds of home based business model, they all give people the opportunity to success. Acturally they are the same one, only one is a early stage model, the other is the upgrade model. They all have its value, due to the diverse stratification of the real life.
The first category is MLM company, (eg. Nuskin, Amway, Market America). They are aimed as recruit product distributor, let's make is plain and down to earth, they are revruiting retailor. The result is the company needs to pay the large compensation fee for the retailors, thus leads to a high price products. If the person involved in this business is not a great sales and retail person; has no time, human and monetery capital. The reult is large monetery lost and time been wasted. Most of them end with a large storage of products in their basement.
The second category is a upgrade model of the first category. (eg. melaleuca) This kind of company they are aimed at recruit business partner, provide a unique Revenue Sharing opportunity. Peolple join in these kind of business have no risk. No monetery investment. The company provide everything, one do not need to purchase large mandetory inventory in a monthly committment 12 month a year, and in a rush to sale them out in a monthly frame. Take Melaleuca for exmaple, they only require their Marketing executive to purchase 35 points product every month, as well as a normal prefer customer do.
A 22 year successful records, and a record of five nomination is INC500 magazine. All prove the success of this Melaleuca's product and service and the overall success of this company.
Also it contribute to prove the success of this kind of new home based business moedl.

What do I need to know before starting a home based clerical business?

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I am a jack of all clerical skills but want to work from home.
I would like to offer virtual and freelance clerical. Rent a secretary kind of thing. I live in a small town within 30 - 60 minutes from larger cities that may need a secretary once in a while but not all the time. Freelancers, home based business people, or possibly professional people who need a personal assistant. How do I get started and what is the best way to market it?

How do i become more sucessful in my home based business?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I recently started a home based business. It is going well but I need to reach out more people. Already contacted family and friends and do postings on craigs list.
Any suggestions?

Paula it is as important to market yourself as it is the opportunity. Dive into your company and learn everything you possibly can. Knowledge is power, and if the people you are sharing your biz with see that you have your ducks in a row by being able to answer their questions you have won half the battle.

Also get help from your upline. I mean if the person that enrolled you has not had much success (for what ever reason) yet then find out who their sponsor is nd keep climbing the ladder until you find someone that is successful. I did this and was mentored by the #16 money earner in the company.

If you aren't talking (real life conversation) then your business will not grow.
